Historic Hotels in Egypt: Which Legends Are Open, and Are They Worth It?

Last verified: October 11, 2026. Room rates were read off live listings on this date for the night of November 17, 2026, and two of these hotels are partway through a change of management. I re-check this page monthly.

Most lists of historic hotels in Egypt read as if nothing has changed since 2022. A lot has. The Winter Palace in Luxor is shut until July 2027. The Old Cataract in Aswan is open, but only in its heritage building, under a new operator. Cairo’s Shepheard has slipped to 2027, and the Mena House’s old palace has no reopening date.

So I priced every legend you can actually book, for the same night and with taxes in. Seven were on sale. The cheapest night for two ran from $140 in Alexandria to $1,012 at the Old Cataract.

This guide covers what’s open, what a night costs, which room to ask for, and when a drink on the terrace is the smarter buy. For how these fit with the rest of the country’s beds, see my guide to where to stay in Egypt.

Key Takeaways

  • Seven legends are bookable, three aren’t. The Winter Palace and the Shepheard are due back in 2027, and the Windsor Hotel in Downtown Cairo has been shut since 2019.
  • A night for two at the Old Cataract started at $1,012, taxes in, and the Mena House at $823 (read October 11, 2026, for November 17).
  • The view is what you pay for. At the Old Cataract, the cheapest Nile-view room is a $1,688 suite.

Which Historic Hotels in Egypt Can You Book Right Now?

Seven of the ten historic hotels in Egypt on my list were taking bookings for November 17, 2026. They’re the Old Cataract, the Mena House, the Cairo Marriott, the Cecil, Le Metropole, the Windsor Palace and the Helnan Auberge. The Winter Palace is closed until a July 2027 target. The Shepheard is due in 2027. The Windsor Hotel in Downtown Cairo had no listing at all.

Two of the seven come with a catch. The Old Cataract sells rooms only in its heritage building while its newer Nile Wing is renovated. The Mena House is open, but none of the rooms on sale were in the old palace.

Which Legends Are Open, Month by Month Status by month, October 2026 to December 2027. Old Cataract: partly open (heritage building only, Nile Wing under renovation) October 2026 to June 2027, due to be complete July 2027. Winter Palace: closed October 2026 to June 2027, due to reopen July 2027. Shepheard: closed, due 2027 with no month given. Windsor, Downtown Cairo: shut since 2019, no reopening date. Most of the famous names now sit with one owner. Legacy Hotels owns the Cairo Marriott, the Mena House, the Cecil, the Old Cataract and the Winter Palace. Talaat Moustafa Group holds a 51% stake in it through its hotel arm, Icon (Enterprise, February 17, 2026). That February the group signed Mandarin Oriental to run the Old Cataract and the Winter Palace.

That’s why the next nine months are a gap year for the grandest names. As of October 2026, two of Egypt’s three most famous historic hotels are under works, and the third, the Mena House, still has its palace closed. A list from 2022 can’t tell you that.

What Does a Night in a Historic Hotel in Egypt Cost?

So what does a night actually cost? On October 11, 2026, the cheapest night for two at the seven open legends ran from $140 to $1,012, taxes and fees included. The low end was the Windsor Palace in Alexandria, the high end the Old Cataract. The middle of the seven was Le Metropole at $190. These are Booking.com rates for Tuesday, November 17, 2026, read on each hotel’s own page.

Steigenberger CecilAlexandria$149$219 (sea view)Yes
Windsor PalaceAlexandria$140$209 (direct sea view)Yes

All prices are all-in for two adults and one night. At four of the seven, the cheapest rate was non-refundable, and every hotel also sold a flexible rate.

Taxes and fees added 26% to 29% to every listed rate. That matches the roughly 29% the big chain hotels added in my countrywide basket, so read any rate without tax as about three-quarters of the real bill.

Two adults, one night.

Will the price hold if you wait? Probably not, because rates are moving as November fills. On October 7, the Old Cataract’s cheapest room for the same night was a Palace Garden View Room at $876. By October 11 that room type had sold out, and the cheapest left cost $136 more. On one re-read minutes later, even the $1,012 rate had gone and the cheapest showed as $1,186, so treat $1,012 as the floor.

Is the Old Cataract in Aswan Worth It?

Yes, for one night, if you book the view rather than the name. Mandarin Oriental took over the Old Cataract in May 2026. It’s selling rooms only in the heritage building while the Nile Wing is renovated, and the whole hotel is due to finish in July 2027 (Mandarin Oriental’s release on Hospitality Net). For November 17, the cheapest room cost $1,012 for two.

Thomas Cook built the hotel, and it opened on January 8, 1900. Churchill and Agatha Christie both stayed, and the 1978 film of Death on the Nile was shot there (Wikipedia, Old Cataract Hotel). Its terrace faces west over Elephantine Island and the felucca river, which is why it’s the sunset everyone photographs.

The catch surprised me. Every room on sale was in the Palace building, which is good news for atmosphere. But the cheap Palace rooms face the garden. The cheapest room with a Nile view was a Palace Nile View Junior Suite at $1,688. The Agatha Christie and Winston Churchill suites were $8,796 each.

So which room should you ask for? If the river is the point, book the junior suite or don’t book at all. Is a garden room worth $1,012, then? It gets you the building, the breakfast and the terrace, which any guest can use.

Before you pay, ask in writing whether works on the Nile Wing can be heard from your room. The hotel’s release says only that it keeps “welcoming guests within its heritage building” during the renovation.

Verdict: Book a Palace Nile View Junior Suite for one night if this is your big splurge. Otherwise come for the terrace. For cheaper beds along the same riverbank, see the full price range on Aswan’s riverbanks, and my Aswan guide for the days around it.

Is the Mena House Worth It for the Pyramid View?

Only if the setting matters more to you than the view itself. On October 11, 2026, the Marriott Mena House’s cheapest night for November 17 was $823 for two with no breakfast. Every pyramid-view room on sale was labelled a partial view, the cheapest at $932. No room on sale was in the old palace.

The building’s story is real. It began in 1869 as Khedive Isma’il’s hunting lodge and opened as a hotel in 1886. Egypt and Israel held peace talks there in December 1977, the year before Camp David (Wikipedia, Mena House Hotel). Marriott has managed it since 2015.

The palace wing is the part with the history, and it’s closed for renovation with no completion date. It’s due to become a JW Marriott when the work is done, according to the same Wikipedia entry. Marriott’s own overview page didn’t mention it when I read it on October 11.

Can you still walk from the hotel to the pyramids? Not the way you once could. The old Mena House gate is no longer the way onto the plateau. Visitors now enter at the visitor centre on the Cairo to Fayoum road and ride electric shuttles between the stops, so the hotel isn’t the short walk it once was. My guide on where the plateau entrance is now has the details.

Verdict: Worth one night for the garden and the pyramid looming over breakfast, if the partial view is enough. For a plainer pyramid-view room at a fraction of the price, see how a pyramid-view hotel compares with Zamalek and Downtown.

Cairo’s Palace Hotel, Alexandria’s Grand Hotels and a Royal Lodge in Fayoum

The Alexandria trio and the Helnan are the bargains of the list, and the Cairo Marriott is the cheap way into a palace. On October 11, 2026, a night for two on November 17 cost $335 at the Cairo Marriott, taxes in. In Alexandria it was $149 at the Steigenberger Cecil, $190 at Le Metropole and $140 at the Windsor Palace. The Helnan Auberge in Fayoum was $168. All four outside Cairo included breakfast, and Le Metropole added a light dinner.

Cairo Marriott and Omar Khayyam Casino

The heart of this hotel is the Gezirah Palace, built in 1869 for the royal guests at the opening of the Suez Canal. It opened as a hotel in 1894. Marriott reopened it in 1982 after adding two towers, and it now has 1,087 rooms (Wikipedia, Cairo Marriott Hotel).

The room names on Booking.com don’t say which building you’re in. A Nile-view room was only $41 more than the cheapest. The palace’s ground floor and garden are where the history lives, and you don’t need a room to see them.

Steigenberger Cecil, Alexandria

The Cecil opened in 1929 on Saad Zaghloul Square, facing the Corniche. Churchill, Somerset Maugham and Al Capone stayed, and it appears in Lawrence Durrell’s Alexandria Quartet. It has 82 rooms and has been a Steigenberger since 2014 (Wikipedia, Cecil Hotel). A sea-view room for November 17 was $219, so $70 buys you the harbour. See where the Cecil and its neighbours sit on Alexandria’s Corniche.

Le Metropole and the Windsor Palace

Both belong to Paradise Inn, which dates them to 1902 and 1906 in their own listing names. The Windsor Palace, at $140, was the cheapest legend on my list, and Le Metropole came in at $190 with dinner. Both sold direct sea-view rooms for under $280. Expect period lobbies and dated rooms rather than polish.

Helnan Auberge, Fayoum

This was King Farouk’s lakeside lodge on Lake Qarun until the 1952 revolution, when the state confiscated it (Ahram Online). A lake-view room for November 17 was $193 for two, and the King Farouk Suite was $645. It’s a day trip from Cairo that you can turn into one quiet night.

Which Legends Are Closed, and When Do They Reopen?

Three famous historic hotels in Egypt can’t be booked this season. The Winter Palace in Luxor closed in early 2026 for a full restoration and is due to reopen in July 2027 as Mandarin Oriental Winter Palace, Luxor. The Shepheard in Cairo, first due in 2024, is now due in 2027 (TravelMole, February 16, 2026).

The Winter Palace opened in January 1907, and Howard Carter used its noticeboard to post news of the Tutankhamun discovery (Wikipedia, Winter Palace Hotel). It still anchors the Corniche on Luxor’s East Bank, even with the doors shut. Its Booking.com listing now shows as closed. Nobody has confirmed what happens to the 1996 Pavillon annex. Until it reopens, see where to sleep in Luxor while the Winter Palace is shut.

The Shepheard you’ll be able to book isn’t the 1841 original. That one burned on January 26, 1952. Today’s building went up in 1957 in Garden City (Wikipedia, Shepheard’s Hotel).

The Windsor Hotel in Downtown Cairo closed in September 2019 after Metro works damaged it (Wikipedia, Windsor Hotel). I couldn’t find a current listing or a reopening date.

Is a Terrace Drink Better Value Than a Night?

At the Old Cataract, probably, though the hotel doesn’t publish the price. The Terrace serves afternoon tea from 4pm to 6:30pm and sunset drinks until 9pm, looking across to Elephantine Island (Mandarin Oriental, The Terrace). That’s the view guests in the $1,012 garden rooms come down to see anyway.

There’s no published tea price and no policy for visitors who aren’t staying. Email the hotel the day before and ask for both in writing, including whether non-guests pay a minimum spend.

Green is the better result for the guest, amber middling, red the worse. Five Booking Facts, Hotel by Hotel Two adults, night of November 17. Green is better for you, red is worse. My rule is simple. Pay for a night where the view comes with the room and the room is what you’d photograph. That means the Old Cataract’s Nile-view suites or a sea-view room at the Cecil. Have a drink where the history is in the public rooms: the Cairo Marriott’s palace garden, or the Mena House if a partial view won’t do.

How Do You Book a Historic Hotel in Egypt Without Overpaying?

With historic hotels in Egypt, book the building, not the brand, and compare all-in prices. Why pay for a famous name and sleep in the annex? On November 17, taxes and fees added 26% to 29% at every hotel, and at four of the seven the cheapest rate was non-refundable. Here’s what I’d check before paying:

  • Ask which building your room is in, in writing. Room names rarely say, and the history is in the old building.
  • Read the view label. “Partial pyramid view” and “garden view” mean what they say.
  • Compare the hotel’s own site with Booking.com for the same night, and check whether breakfast is included.
  • Pick the flexible rate during works. Plans at the Old Cataract can change before July 2027.
  • Price the bill with tax. My guide to how the taxes on an Egyptian hotel bill work breaks it down.

Rates also move. The Old Cataract’s cheapest room for November 17 rose from $876 to $1,012 in four days in October. If one of these is your splurge night, book early.

Historic Hotels in Egypt FAQs

Is the Old Cataract hotel in Aswan still open?

Yes. Mandarin Oriental took over in May 2026 and is selling rooms in the heritage building while the Nile Wing is renovated, with completion due in July 2027. For November 17, 2026, the cheapest room cost $1,012 for two, taxes in, read on October 11.

Is the Winter Palace in Luxor open?

No. It closed in early 2026 for a full restoration and is due to reopen in July 2027 as Mandarin Oriental Winter Palace, Luxor, per TravelMole in February 2026. Its Booking.com listing shows as closed. My Luxor stay guide covers where to sleep in the meantime.

Can you visit the Old Cataract without staying there?

Yes, through The Terrace, which serves afternoon tea from 4pm to 6:30pm and sunset drinks until 9pm. The hotel publishes no price and no policy for visitors who aren’t staying. Email it to ask about both, and any minimum spend, before you go.

Which hotel was used in Death on the Nile?

The Old Cataract in Aswan. The 1978 film was shot there, and Agatha Christie herself stayed at the hotel. The Agatha Christie Suite, with a Nile view, cost $8,796 for two for November 17, 2026, taxes included.

When does the Shepheard Hotel in Cairo reopen?

In 2027, as Mandarin Oriental Shepheard, Cairo, after delays pushed it back from 2024, per TravelMole in February 2026. No month has been announced. The building dates from 1957, because the 1841 original burned in the Cairo Fire of 1952.

How much does a night at the Mena House cost?

For November 17, 2026, the cheapest room at the Marriott Mena House was $823 for two with taxes but no breakfast, or $848 with it. The cheapest pyramid-view room, labelled a partial view, was $932. Taxes and fees added 29% to the listed rate.

The Bottom Line

Historic hotels in Egypt are worth one night, not a whole trip. Here’s the short version:

  • Seven legends are open, but two only in part. The Old Cataract sells its heritage building only, and the Mena House’s old palace is closed.
  • One night for two runs from $140 in Alexandria to $1,012 in Aswan, taxes in, for November 17.
  • Pay for the view, not the name. If the view isn’t in the room, have the drink instead.
  • The Winter Palace and the Shepheard are due back in 2027. I’ll update this page when they take bookings.

Once you’ve picked your splurge night, plan the rest of your beds around it.
