Last verified: October 4, 2026. Room rates here were read off live listings on this date, for the night of November 17, 2026, and drive times were read the same evening, after rush hour. I re-check this page monthly and update the date each time.
The cheapest rooms in Cairo cluster around the pyramids. On October 4, 2026, I priced 150 places to sleep across six parts of the city, and the typical room near the Giza plateau cost $40 a night for two. In Zamalek it was $137. That gap is the first thing to understand about where to stay in Cairo.

Disclosure: Some links in this guide may earn us a commission, at no extra cost to you. It never changes what we recommend.
The second is distance. The pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum sit on the far west bank. Almost everything else you came for is on the east. A cheap bed on the wrong side can cost you hours.
So this guide to where to stay in Cairo prices both. It gives a dated, tax-included night in each area, the drive from each base to the main sights, and a plan for splitting the stay. For how Cairo’s beds compare with boats, guesthouses and resorts elsewhere, see where to stay across the rest of Egypt.
Key Takeaways
- Sleep on the side your days are on. Giza for the pyramids and the museum, central Cairo for the rest.
- A typical night for two, taxes in: $137 in Zamalek, $64 Downtown, $40 near the pyramids (150 listings, read October 4, 2026).
- Three nights or more? Split the stay. One night in Giza, the rest central.

Where to Stay in Cairo: The Short Answer
Pick Zamalek for calm and restaurants, Downtown for price and the metro, and Giza for one night beside the pyramids. In my October 4, 2026 basket, a typical night for two cost $137, $64 and $40 in those three, taxes included. On a stay of three nights or more, I’d book two of them.
Cairo has plenty of rooms. In mid-2026, the property firm JLL counted about 29,200 hotel rooms in the stock it tracks, with 1,277 more due by the end of the year (JLL, Cairo Hospitality Market Dynamics, Q2 2026). Outside Christmas, New Year and Easter, you’ll find a room. The question is where.
| Base | Typical night for two | Best for | Biggest drawback | Drive to the Grand Egyptian Museum | Drive to Khan el-Khalili |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zamalek | $137 | Calm, food, evening walks | Price | 23 min | 20 min |
| Downtown | $64 | Value, metro, old museum | Noise, old buildings | 25 min | 11 min |
| Garden City | $64 | Big Nile five-stars | Little street life | About 25 min | About 11 min |
| Giza | $40 | Pyramids and museum | Far from the rest | 14 min | 40 min |
| Heliopolis | $80 | Airport nights | Far from Giza | 37 min | 19 min |
| Maadi | $84 | Long stays | Far from most sights | 30 min | 38 min |
The drive times are evening readings taken after rush hour, so treat them as quiet-road times. Garden City borders Downtown, and I’ve used the Downtown readings for it.
What Does a Night Cost in Each Area?
Between $40 and $137 for two, depending on the area. On October 4, 2026, I took the first 25 results Booking.com returned for each of six areas, for two adults on the night of Tuesday, November 17, 2026, and added the taxes and fees back in. “Typical” means the median, the listing in the middle.
Three things stand out for anyone deciding where to stay in Cairo. Zamalek has no cheap tier at all: the lowest of its 25 came to $52, and ten cost more than $150. Giza is the opposite, with 16 of 25 under $50. And Downtown and Garden City share a median of $64, though Garden City’s list also holds three Nile five-stars at $296, $330 and $928.
Every figure here includes tax, because the listed price rarely does. Chain hotels in the basket added about 29% and small places about 15%. How the add-ons on an Egyptian hotel bill work has the full breakdown. The room is one line of a larger sum, and the full Egypt budget in EGP and USD covers the rest.
This basket has limits. It’s one night, one platform and one page of results per area, so it shows the shape of the market and misses plenty of hotels.
It also depends on the search. My Egypt-wide guide prints $32 below the pyramids, from a broader search for the whole city on the same day. Here I searched around the museum, which is why the Giza figure is $40.
Is Zamalek Worth the Higher Price?
For three nights or more, I think so. Zamalek’s typical night was $137 for two in my October 2026 basket, a little over double Downtown, and what it buys is somewhere to walk in the evening. The island has trees, embassies, galleries and a dense run of restaurants and cafes you can reach on foot.
It’s also better placed than its reputation. The off-peak drive to the old Egyptian Museum at Tahrir was 8 minutes, to Khan el-Khalili 20, and to the Grand Egyptian Museum 23. Among single bases, only Downtown beat it in my three-day test further down.
What kind of room do you get? Mostly small ones. Roughly half of the 25 listings were apartments, and most of the rest were boutique hotels of a few dozen rooms. A big international brand appeared once, at $228. If you want a pool and a lobby, look at Garden City instead.
Zamalek isn’t cut off from the metro either. Line 3 has stopped at Safaa Hegazy station on the island since the Attaba to Kit Kat extension opened in October 2022 (Ahram Online, October 6, 2022). Fares have run from 10 to 20 EGP by distance since March 27, 2026 (Egypt Independent, new Cairo Metro and train ticket prices).
The weak point is the bridges. Every car trip off the island crosses one, and from about 3pm to 7pm they clog. Plan to be back before then or after. How to plan Cairo day by day shows which sights pair up on each side of the river.
Is Downtown Cairo a Good Base?
Yes, if you’ll trade quiet for position. Downtown’s typical night was $64 for two in the October 4, 2026 basket, the middle half ran $51 to $90, and it logged the least time in a car of any base I tested. Tahrir Square, the old Egyptian Museum and the metro interchange are on the doorstep.
From Tahrir, Khan el-Khalili was 11 minutes off-peak and the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization 14. That makes Downtown the natural base for the east-bank days. Before you go, read up on which Cairo museum holds what and on shopping and haggling in the bazaar.
The trade is the buildings. Downtown is a grid of grand apartment blocks from around 1900, and most budget hotels are a floor or two inside one. Before booking, check four things in recent guest photos and reviews: which floor, whether the lift works, whether the room faces the street, and what the entrance looks like at night.
The range is wide. A hostel room for two came to $22, the cheapest on Downtown’s list. The one five-star in Downtown’s 25 came to $237.
Garden City is the quiet strip of embassy streets just south of Tahrir. Its Nile-front towers are where to look for a big international hotel with a central address. The Sofitel Cairo Downtown Nile, which opened in 2025 with 615 rooms, is the largest hotel the brand has opened anywhere (Hotel Management Network, February 24, 2025).
Is a Pyramid-View Hotel in Giza Worth It?
For one night, usually yes. For a whole stay, no. Rooms near the plateau were the cheapest in my October 4, 2026 basket at $40 for two, and 24 of the 25 listings were small inns and guesthouses, most with “pyramids view” in the name. Everything on the east bank is then 27 to 40 minutes away off-peak, and up to an hour in traffic.
There are two different Gizas, and the basket shows the gap. The guesthouses pack the streets below the plateau and around the museum, and the middle half cost $30 to $62. The resort hotels are another product. The Marriott Mena House, at the foot of the plateau, listed at $760 for November 17 and came to $980 with taxes. Earlier the same day it showed no rooms for that night, so its availability moves by the hour. Whether the Mena House earns its rate covers what that money buys, starting with a pyramid view that’s only ever partial.
What should you check before booking a view?
“View” is the word doing the work in these listings, and it’s worth testing:
- Guest photos, not the listing’s. Look for pictures taken from the room you’d book, in the last few months.
- The room category. The rooftop may have the view while the cheapest room faces a wall. The booking should name the view.
- The street. These are dense lanes beside the busiest tourist site in the country, so plan for noise and for sellers at the door. How the touts at the pyramids operate explains the pattern.
How do you get from a Giza hotel to the gate?
Not always on foot. Since April 2025 the main entrance has been the visitor centre on the Cairo to Fayoum road, south of the plateau, and private cars can’t drive onto the site (Ahram Online, April 9, 2025). I couldn’t confirm whether the gate by the Sphinx is admitting ticket holders this season. Assume a short ride to the main gate, and ask your host.
Where the plateau entrance is now covers the gate and the tickets, and booking a museum time slot covers the other half of a Giza day. The off-peak drive from the Mena House to the museum was 14 minutes.
Does the airport or the metro change the answer?
The airport can. Some low-cost flights land at Sphinx International (code SPX) on the west side instead of Cairo International. Wizz Air, for one, sells its Cairo flights as “Cairo (SPX)”. Check the code on your ticket. If it says SPX, a first or last night in Giza makes sense. From the museum, the drive there was 34 minutes off-peak.
The metro can’t yet. Line 4’s first phase will run 19 km through 17 stations, past the museum and the pyramids, but it isn’t due until the first half of 2028 (Daily News Egypt, April 28, 2026). Don’t book a Giza room for a train that isn’t running.
How Much Time Does Each Base Cost You in Traffic?
Between about 1 hour 40 minutes and 3 hours 20 minutes over three days, and that’s on quiet roads. I read two dozen drive times on Google Maps on October 4, 2026, after 9pm Cairo time, from five bases to five places a first trip is likely to use. Then I added them up for a standard three-day plan.
The plan is simple. Day one is the pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum. Day two is Islamic Cairo and Khan el-Khalili. Day three is the old Egyptian Museum, then the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization. Each day starts and ends at the hotel.
Two notes on the sums. The pyramid day is counted as hotel to museum and back for every base, and it leaves out the hop between the museum and the plateau’s visitor-centre gate, which is 5.6 km by road and typically 10 to 14 minutes. Day three uses the 14-minute leg from Tahrir to the second museum. Downtown, for example, is 50 minutes on day one, 22 on day two and 28 on day three.
Downtown came out lowest at 100 minutes, and Zamalek cost 28 more. Maadi was worst at 201. Staying in Giza for all three nights came to 178 minutes, nearly double Downtown, because two of the three days are on the far bank. Is a room $24 cheaper worth an extra hour and a quarter in a car?
Now add the traffic. Those are close to best-case times. For a Tuesday 5pm departure, Google Maps gave a typical 22 to 45 minutes from Tahrir to the Grand Egyptian Museum, against the 25 I read at night. Khan el-Khalili back to the Mena House came to 40 minutes to an hour, against 40. To the plateau’s visitor-centre gate, the 5pm range was 30 to 50 minutes from Tahrir and 28 to 50 from Zamalek. A Giza base puts two of those cross-river evening returns in your trip. A central base has one.
The fares barely matter. Ride-hailing is cheap, and getting around Cairo and the rest of Egypt explains how it works. The three-day plan covers 56 km from Downtown and 123 km from Giza. The Cairo guide’s airport to Zamalek fare of 180 to 280 EGP works out at 9 to 13 EGP a km over the 21 km I read for that trip. At 11 EGP a km and 52 EGP to the dollar, the mid-September rate, that’s roughly $12 against $26. A bad base costs you hours far more than dollars.
Should You Split Your Stay Between Giza and Central Cairo?
On three nights or more, yes. One night in Giza and two Downtown came to 107 minutes in a car in my October 2026 readings, about the same as Downtown throughout, and $180 for rooms and rides against $204. The saving is small. The real gain is the morning.
Sleep in Giza the night before the pyramid day and you’re at the gate when it opens, with the cool hours ahead of you. You also get to pick your crossing. From a central hotel, the pyramid day tends to end with a rush-hour ride back. With your bags at a Giza hotel, you can move to the centre before 3pm, or after dinner once the roads clear.
Which order? It depends on the trip:
- Giza first if you land at Sphinx International, or arrive late and want the pyramids at opening time the next day.
- Giza last if you leave Cairo on the sleeper train, which you can board at Giza station.
- Two nights only? Don’t split. Stay central and do Giza as a day.
All Giza is the cheapest plan at $146, and it’s the right one if the pyramids are the only reason you’ve come. It gets expensive in hours on a longer stay. The three itinerary lengths compared shows how many Cairo nights each trip leaves you.
The same question comes up again in Luxor, where the choice is which bank of the Nile to sleep on.
Which Other Areas Work, and Which Should You Skip?
Heliopolis and Maadi both work for particular trips, at a typical $80 and $84 a night for two in the October 4, 2026 basket. Neither is the right base for a short first visit. The suburbs beyond them are too far for almost anyone on holiday.
Heliopolis and the airport strip. Book here for one reason: a dawn flight. The off-peak drive to Cairo International was 16 minutes, against 51 from Giza. The airport-area chain hotels in the list came to $132 to $236 with taxes. The museum in Giza was 37 minutes away, the longest reading to it from any base.
Maadi. This is a residential district in the south, known for its expatriate community. Its list was mostly apartments, which suits a long stay. For sightseeing it produced the highest car time of the five bases. It’s a reasonable start for the Saqqara and Dahshur day trip, which heads south anyway.
Islamic Cairo. A handful of small hotels sit inside the old city. I didn’t price them for this basket. Many of the lanes are narrow or closed to cars, so travel light if you book one.
New Cairo, 6th of October and Sheikh Zayed. These are suburbs built for residents, a long drive from the sights. Skip them unless you’re visiting someone. That’s a judgment about convenience, not safety, and how safe Egypt is right now covers that question properly.
Where to Stay in Cairo FAQs
What is the best area to stay in Cairo for first-time visitors?
Zamalek for comfort or Downtown for value, with one night in Giza for the pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum. In my October 4, 2026 basket, a typical night for two cost $137 in Zamalek, $64 Downtown and $40 near the pyramids, taxes included.
Is it better to stay in Cairo or Giza?
Both, on a stay of three nights or more. Giza suits the pyramid and museum day, and central Cairo suits everything else. After rush hour, the drive between Tahrir Square and the Grand Egyptian Museum was 25 minutes over 17 km. For a Tuesday 5pm departure, Google Maps gives a typical 22 to 45 minutes.
Are pyramid-view hotels in Giza worth it?
For one night, yes. The middle half of the 25 Giza listings I priced cost $30 to $62 for two, taxes included. Check recent guest photos from the exact room, make sure the booking names the view, and plan for a noisy street.
How far are the pyramids from Downtown Cairo?
About 17 km by road to the Grand Egyptian Museum and 22 to 24 km to the plateau’s visitor-centre gate, on the routes Google Maps gave on October 4, 2026. The drive to the museum was 25 minutes after rush hour. For a Tuesday 5pm departure, the typical range was 22 to 45 minutes to the museum and 30 to 50 to the gate.
How many nights do you need in Cairo?
Three nights covers the pyramids and the museum, Islamic Cairo, and the two east-bank museums, at about 100 minutes of total driving from a Downtown base. Add a fourth night for Saqqara and Dahshur. With only two nights, stay central.
What is the cheapest area to stay in Cairo?
Giza, by a wide margin. In my basket, 16 of 25 listings near the pyramids cost under $50 for two with taxes, and the typical price was $40. Downtown was next at $64, and its cheapest room, in a hostel, came to $22.
The Bottom Line
Where to stay in Cairo comes down to four rules:
- Choose by the river. Sleep west for the pyramids and the museum, east or on the island for everything else.
- The cheapest bed has the longest commute. A $40 Giza room cost 178 minutes in a car over three days, against 100 from Downtown.
- Split any stay of three nights or more. One Giza night, then move central.
- Read every price with taxes in. The bill ran 15% to 29% above the listed rate.
Next comes Upper Egypt, where rooms are scarcer and worth booking first. Where to stay across the rest of Egypt has the order to book in.
I’m Marco Delgado, and I write every guide on Egypt Travel Vibe. I read each room rate and drive time on this page myself on the date at the top. The prices are one page of results for one night, and the drive times are mostly late-evening readings, so treat both as a starting point. Where I couldn’t confirm something, like the Sphinx-side gate, I’ve said so and left the guess out.
