Diving in Egypt: Hurghada vs Sharm vs Dahab vs Marsa Alam Compared

Last verified: September 22, 2026. Dive prices, park fees and boat safety rules on this coast change every season, and operators rarely date their lists. Every figure here comes from a dated price list or an official page, and where they disagree I say so. I re-check this page monthly and update the date each time.

The same two dives cost 60 euros in one Red Sea town and 96 in another. Neither price includes the fee collected at the jetty. And neither tells you whether the town suits the diver you actually are, which is the question that decides whether your week is great or merely expensive.

This guide to diving in Egypt puts the four bases on the same six questions. Which one fits your logbook? What does a dive day cost, and which fees land on top? Can you snorkel from the beach, when should you go, and how safe are the boats?

Which Base Is Best for Diving in Egypt?

The Red Sea off Egypt holds more than 200 coral species and around 1,200 kinds of fish (DIVE Magazine, Egypt marine life, checked September 2026). All four bases dive the Red Sea or its gulfs. What differs is how you reach the reef, how hard the sites are, and what the town is like when you surface. Your logbook should make the call.

Here’s the ladder I use. Under roughly 30 dives, Hurghada: sheltered coral gardens around Giftun, and so many dive schools that courses are among the cheapest on the coast. Past 30 dives, Sharm, because Ras Mohammed and the Straits of Tiran are walls and drift that you’ll only enjoy with some experience. If you want to dive from the beach, cheaply, for weeks, Dahab. And if you’ve done all that and want oceanic whitetips and quiet reefs, Marsa Alam.

That’s the verdict I reach in which of the two resort towns fits the rest of your trip, and Dahab and Marsa Alam slot in either side of it. Each base has its own guide: Dahab’s shore dives and the Blue Hole, honestly, and the Marsa Alam guide for the deep south.

Can you split a week between two bases? Only on the same side of the water. There’s no scheduled Hurghada to Sharm ferry as of 2026, so Hurghada pairs with Marsa Alam by road, and Sharm pairs with Dahab, 90 minutes up the coast.

What Does Diving in Egypt Cost?

On September 22, 2026, a two-dive day ran 60 euros by boat at Egypt Dive in Hurghada (Egypt Dive price list, valid from April 1, 2026). It ran 96 euros booked online at Circle Divers in Sharm (Circle Divers, checked September 22, 2026). Marsa Alam undercuts both, because much of its diving starts from the shore. Dahab’s 70 sits between them, and that’s with your own gear.

I priced the same two items at one named operator per base: a two-dive day and a snorkel trip. The lists are in euros, which is how the whole coast prices diving. At a rate of about 1.15 US dollars to the euro in mid-September 2026, 60 euros is roughly $69.

The Marsa Alam figure is two dives reached by minibus. A full day on a big boat there is 61 euros on the same list (Red Sea Diving Safari, Summer 2026 list). Dahab’s 70 assumes your own gear, and it rose to 86 with rental at H2O Divers when I priced it for the Dahab guide.

Operators inside the same town can differ by 50% or more, so treat these as one honest reference point, not the floor. What’s included moves the price too. Circle Divers bundles nitrox and transfers. Egypt Dive includes lunch on the boat and transfers from central Hurghada.

Learning is where the four bases sit closest. The headline PADI Open Water prices below span 90 euros, and part of that gap is paperwork: three of the four centres quote the PADI materials and certification separately. In Dahab, H2O Divers includes certification in its 400 and charges 50 more for PADI eLearning, while Lighthouse quotes about 95 euros for materials on top of a 300 course (Lighthouse Dahab).

A realistic course budget is 350 to 450 euros anywhere on this coast, over three or four days. The whole trip, priced in EGP and USD puts that against everything else a week in Egypt costs.

The Fees Added on Top

Diving in Egypt always comes with a park or chamber fee on top of the dive price, and no two coasts charge it the same way. In Hurghada, Egypt Dive adds 5 euros a day for the Giftun national park. In Sharm, Circle Divers adds 7 euros for every boat trip and every visit to Ras Mohammed, plus an optional 1 euro chamber donation. In Marsa Alam the chamber fee is compulsory.

Here’s what one two-dive day actually costs once those fees are on the bill.

The chamber fee is the strangest line. At Red Sea Diving Safari in Marsa Alam it’s a compulsory 7 euros for every diver (Red Sea Diving Safari, Summer 2026 list). At Circle Divers in Sharm it’s an optional 1 euro a day. I found no government-wide rate, so ask your centre which model it uses.

Dahab’s fee is paid at the road checkpoint to the Blue Hole, in cash. One centre’s 2026 list puts it at $20, and it’s commonly reported as $25 with the checkpoint charge (Scuba Seekers, 2026). Dahab’s in-town sites, like the Lighthouse and Eel Garden, don’t charge it.

What about the Ras Mohammed gate price for people arriving by car? I couldn’t pin it down. Figures quoted online for foreign visitors run from about $5 to 500 EGP, and I found no official published schedule. If you’re diving, the operator’s 7 euro park fee covers it.

Liveaboards add a governmental reef tax at booking. Operators confirm it exists, but none I checked publishes the amount (Master Liveaboards, Egypt FAQ, checked September 22, 2026). Ask for it in writing before you pay a deposit.

Can You Snorkel From the Beach in Egypt?

Yes, in Dahab and Marsa Alam, and at some hotels in Sharm. Dahab’s Lighthouse reef runs from the surface down to about 10 m, right off the town’s seafront (SCUBA Travel, Dahab dive sites, 2026). In Hurghada, Egypt Dive sells snorkelling only as a boat trip, at 35 euros plus the park fee.

That’s the whole decision for families and non-divers, and it’s the part of diving in Egypt the brochures blur. In Hurghada the reef is a boat ride away. In Dahab it’s across the road. A boat day is a fine day out, but if you want to snorkel every morning before breakfast, pick a base where the reef starts at the shore.

Sharm sits in between. Its better hotels front real house reefs, so check before you book. Ras Mohammed is also reachable by land, and Circle Divers charges the same 7 euro park fee for the land visit as for the boat.

Marsa Alam’s house reefs start at the shore too, and Abu Dabbab bay adds seagrass where green turtles feed. Entry there is 11 euros (Red Sea Diving Safari, Summer 2026 list). Read the Abu Dabbab rules in the Marsa Alam guide before you go. A guaranteed dugong sighting is a red flag, not a selling point.

One rule applies to every snorkeller on this coast: wear fins and check the current before you swim out past the reef edge. Shore entries look easy, and in current they aren’t.

Which Sites Need What Certification?

One liveaboard operator sets the SS Thistlegorm minimum at 20 logged dives. The Brothers and Daedalus itinerary needs 50 logged dives plus Advanced Open Water (Master Liveaboards, Egypt FAQ; Emperor Divers, both checked September 22, 2026). For diving in Egypt, those gates matter more to your choice of base than any list of famous sites.

Day-boat operators set their own Thistlegorm rule. One Hurghada centre asks for 30 m certification rather than a dive count (Red Sea Diving Academy, 2025 list), so check your centre’s rule before you book.

The Thistlegorm is the reason many divers come to Sharm in the first place. It’s a British supply ship sunk by German aircraft on October 6, 1941. It sits on the seabed at about 30 m in the Strait of Gubal (PADI, A brief history of the SS Thistlegorm). Circle Divers charges a 145 euro supplement for the trip from Sharm.

It’s also loved to the point of damage. The Thistlegorm Project, run by Alexandria University and the University of Edinburgh, counts about eight boats a day in summer, carrying around 200 divers who make 600 dives on the wreck (The Thistlegorm Project). Boats over 40 tonnes tie straight onto the wreck and tear the superstructure. Ask how your boat moors, and don’t touch anything.

Ras Mohammed became Egypt’s first national park in 1983 (Wikipedia, Ras Muhammad National Park), and its walls are why most divers pick Sharm. The Blue Hole in Dahab is a different story. The dive most people do there is gentle, and the deaths cluster at one deep tunnel far below it. The Dahab guide’s cross-section shows exactly where. When Is the Best Time to Dive the Red Sea?

Any month works. At Sharm and Hurghada the water ranges from about 21°C in February to 28°C in August, and Marsa Alam runs roughly 1.5°C warmer all year (Climates to Travel, Egypt sea temperatures, 1991 to 2020 normals). The sweet spots are April to June and September to November.

The same seasons work for diving in Egypt as for why the coast works when the Nile doesn’t. Warm water, calm seas and thinner crowds make spring and autumn the best of it. Winter diving is perfectly good with a 5 mm wetsuit. In the deep south, the Marsa Alam guide favours October to November and February to April, when the offshore crossings are calmest.

The big animals keep their own calendar. Oceanic whitetips gather at Elphinstone from October to December. On the offshore reefs, PADI puts hammerhead season at June to September and whale sharks at May to August (PADI, Diving in Egypt). Emperor Divers runs its Brothers, Daedalus and Elphinstone liveaboard route from March to November, at 1,350 to 1,600 euros for seven nights on its current schedule (Emperor Divers).

Reef Health After the 2024 Heatwave

In 2024 the southern Red Sea took the heat hardest. HEPCA’s Bleach Watch survey found up to 50.1% of coral bleached at Wadi el Gemal, south of Marsa Alam, against 9% around Hurghada. The Gulf of Aqaba, off Dahab, showed relatively low levels (HEPCA, Bleach Watch 2024 update, 2025). HEPCA is the Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Association.

That adds a caveat to the ranking. Marsa Alam still has the bigger animals and the quieter reefs, and it’s still the best diving on Egypt’s mainland coast. But its reefs are the ones under the most heat stress. HEPCA’s preliminary estimate put 2025 recovery at 75 to 88%, depending on species and site. I couldn’t find a published final figure yet.

The same survey found a pattern divers wouldn’t guess. Bleaching was worse at 10 m than in the 2 to 5 m shallows. So a bright reef top isn’t proof the whole reef is fine.

The Gulf of Aqaba’s corals have a reputation for surviving heat. A 2025 study by Kochman and Fine found they came through four straight marine heatwaves without mass bleaching (Science of the Total Environment, September 2025). Some Aqaba corals did bleach in 2024, the first documented bleaching there, just not en masse. The authors warn that early bleaching in the shallows suggests the refuge is nearing its limit.

What can you do to keep diving in Egypt worth the trip? Use reef-safe sunscreen, which reef-safe sunscreen and the rest of the kit covers. Keep your buoyancy and your fins off the coral. And pick boats that use the fixed moorings. HEPCA says it maintains more than 1,000 mooring buoys along the coast (HEPCA moorings).

Is Diving in Egypt Safe?

Shore dives and day boats carry the ordinary risks of diving anywhere. Liveaboards are where the record is poor. In a safety bulletin on February 6, 2025, the UK’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch said 16 accidents had involved Red Sea liveaboards in five years. It added that three liveaboard boats had been lost in the previous 21 months, with deaths including UK nationals (GOV.UK, MAIB safety bulletin, 2025).

The losses didn’t stop with that bulletin. On July 14, 2026, the 27 m liveaboard Sea Spirit sank off Ras Gharib with five crew and no guests aboard. Local reports say one crew member died later, which Divernet says is still unconfirmed (Divernet, July 2026). The UK government’s own advice says the safety standards of Red Sea diving operators and boats “vary considerably” (GOV.UK, Egypt travel advice, checked September 22, 2026).

So when you plan a liveaboard for diving in Egypt, vet the boat, not the country. Get the vessel’s name on your invoice, refuse a switch on arrival, and ask for its safety certificate. The Marsa Alam guide’s liveaboard checklist has the full five questions, and they apply to every coast.

One operator’s list counts recompression chambers at all four bases: two in Sharm, two in Hurghada, two in Marsa Alam and one in Dahab, plus El Gouna, Safaga and Hamata (Master Liveaboards, Egypt FAQ). The same list says it can change without notice, so ask your centre where its nearest working chamber is. Sharm’s Hyperbaric Medical Center has been treating divers since 1993 (DAN Europe, Alert Diver). Check that your travel insurance covers diving, including evacuation, to the depth you’ll dive. Most standard policies don’t.

What about sharks? Fatal attacks are rare. As of September 2026, the two most recent were both on the mainland coast. A young Russian man was killed off Hurghada on June 8, 2023 (Xinhua, 2023). An Italian tourist was killed north of Marsa Alam on December 29, 2024 (CNN, 2024). Follow the guide’s briefing, and don’t swim out past the reef alone at dusk.

Diving in Egypt is one sea and four different trips. Count your logged dives before you pick a town. Add the park and chamber fees to the headline price. And if you book a liveaboard, name the boat on the invoice.
