Egyptian Museum vs GEM vs NMEC: Which Cairo Museum Should You Visit? (Where Tut & the Mummies Actually Are)

Last verified: September 27, 2026. Opening hours at all three museums, and the Tahrir and NMEC prices, were read off the official sites on that date; the GEM price was read at its checkout on September 16. GEM foreign prices rise on November 1, 2026, and I’ll update this page that week.

The Egyptian Museum vs GEM question trips up almost everyone planning Cairo, and the web makes it worse. The old Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square no longer holds Tutankhamun or the royal mummies. Tut has moved to the new Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) at Giza, and the mummies to a third museum, the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) in Fustat.

In September 2026 I still found popular Cairo guides sending readers to Tahrir Square for mummies that left in April 2021. Others still quote GEM prices from before it opened. Get it wrong and you lose half a day in Cairo traffic.

This guide sorts out what’s where, what each costs, and which one or two to pick. Museums rank high among the experiences worth planning an Egypt trip around, so it’s worth getting the order right.

Key Takeaways

  • Tutankhamun is at the GEM, more than 5,000 objects including the gold mask.
  • The royal mummies are at NMEC in Fustat. Twenty-two moved there from Tahrir in 2021.
  • Tahrir kept the Tanis gold, the Narmer Palette and Yuya and Thuya’s tomb goods.
  • One museum? The GEM. Two? Add NMEC.
  • GEM 1,500 EGP, online only. Tahrir and NMEC are 550 EGP each.

Where Are Tutankhamun and the Royal Mummies Now?

In 2026, Tutankhamun is at the GEM in Giza and the royal mummies are at NMEC in Fustat. The Tanis gold is still at the old Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square. The last Tut pieces left Tahrir when its Tutankhamun gallery closed on October 20, 2025 (Ahram Online, October 2025).

That move was the end of a long exodus. As late as June 2025, 26 Tut objects, the gold mask and two coffins among them, were still on show at Tahrir (Al-Monitor, via AFP, June 12, 2025). The mummies went four years earlier, in the April 3, 2021 Pharaohs’ Golden Parade: 22 kings and queens, driven across the city to Fustat (Smithsonian, April 2021).

Here’s the ledger I wish every guide printed. It covers the headline pieces people ask about, with where they are now.

Two corrections are worth knowing. Khufu’s boat was never at Tahrir; it came to the GEM from its old museum beside the Great Pyramid in August 2021 (The National, August 6, 2021). And several 2026 guides still describe a royal mummies room at Tahrir. It doesn’t exist any more.

Every headline move ran one way: out of Tahrir. What stayed behind is older, and in some rooms, better.

Egyptian Museum vs GEM vs NMEC: Prices, Hours and Booking Compared

On September 27, 2026, the official egymonuments.com checkout showed 550 EGP for a foreign adult at both the Tahrir museum and NMEC, against 1,500 EGP at the GEM (egymonuments.com, Egyptian Museum; egymonuments.com, NMEC). That’s about $29 for the GEM and $11 each for the other two, at 51.79 pounds to the dollar that day (Central Bank of Egypt).

The booking split matters more than the price gap. The GEM runs its own site, tickets.gem.eg, and hasn’t sold tickets at the gate since December 1, 2025 (Egypt State Information Service, November 14, 2025). Its foreign prices rise by $5 on November 1, 2026 (Egypt Independent, April 16, 2026).

Tahrir and NMEC sit on the ministry’s egymonuments.com portal, which puts them in one shopping cart alongside Giza and most other ministry sites. At the gate, both take cards only, as every major ministry site has since June 2023 (Egyptian Streets, June 3, 2023).

The GEM costs almost as much as the other two together. On a short trip, that’s the ticket worth paying for.

If you’re booking the GEM, how GEM booking works, step by step covers the price tiers, the time slots and the terms you can’t undo. For the bigger picture, I’ve worked out where three museum tickets sit in a full Egypt budget.

Is the Grand Egyptian Museum the One to Pick First?

Yes, if you only see one. When it fully opened in November 2025, the GEM showed more than 5,000 Tutankhamun objects together for the first time since Howard Carter found the tomb in 1922 (ABC News, via AP, November 1, 2025). Nowhere else can you see the whole burial at once.

Around it sit about 50,000 objects on display (PBS NewsHour, via AP, October 30, 2025), including Khufu’s boat in its own gallery. In the entrance hall stands the 11-metre, 83-tonne Ramesses II, moved in from Ramses Square in January 2018 (Al Arabiya, January 25, 2018).

It’s busy. In its first week open to the public it drew about 19,000 visitors a day (Egypt State Information Service, November 10, 2025), and by December 2025 the Cabinet put the average at about 15,000 a day, which it called its maximum daily capacity (Egyptian Streets, December 14, 2025). The planning ministry later counted more than 6.5 million visitors from opening to September 2026 (CairoScene, September 11, 2026). The museum’s own chief executive gave a lower figure, over 3 million by the end of July (Xinhua, September 2026), so treat the total as big and disputed.

Give it four to five hours, and don’t try to see everything. The galleries run 9am to 6pm, and to 9pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays, with last entry an hour before closing (tickets.gem.eg, checked September 27, 2026). The GEM sits at the edge of the Giza plateau, so pair it with the plateau the same morning and come in for the afternoon.

The part people underestimate is the Grand Staircase. It climbs six storeys past statues of kings and gods, and it’s easy to lose an hour there before you reach Tut. Budget for that.

The GEM is the one to book first because it’s the one you can’t walk into. Tahrir and NMEC will sell you a ticket at the gate. The GEM won’t.

Is NMEC Worth It Just for the Mummies?

Yes. One 550 EGP ticket covers the whole museum, and the Royal Mummies Hall is included, with no separate ticket on the checkout (egymonuments.com, NMEC, checked September 27, 2026). The hall holds kings and queens from Egypt’s 17th to 20th Dynasties: Hatshepsut, Thutmose III, Seti I, Ramesses II and Ramesses III among them (NMEC, Mummies Hall, checked September 27, 2026).

A note on numbers, because the sources disagree. Twenty-two mummies moved in the 2021 parade, but the museum’s own site profiles 20 in the hall today. I’d rather print both than pick one.

Is one room worth the drive across Cairo? I’d say yes. Each king or queen lies in a separate case, and these are the rulers whose temples and tombs you’ll walk through in Luxor. Seeing Hatshepsut or Ramesses II before or after Luxor changes both visits. The main gallery is a quicker walk through Egyptian history, from prehistory to modern times.

Plan 90 minutes to two hours in total. NMEC opens 9am to 5pm with last tickets at 4pm, and on Fridays it reopens from 6pm to 9pm (NMEC, opening hours, checked September 27, 2026). That Friday evening slot is the easiest way to add it to a GEM day.

One thing to check on arrival: photography. The ministry checkout says phone photos are free, but NMEC’s own policy page still says private photos need a photography ticket (NMEC, visitor tips and policies, checked September 27, 2026). Ask at the ticket desk, and never use flash near the mummies. The nearest metro is Mar Girgis on Line 1, and Coptic Cairo is right beside it.

Is the Old Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Still Worth Visiting?

On a trip with four or more days in Cairo, yes. On a shorter trip, it’s the one to cut. Tahrir still holds about 170,000 objects, even after sending 32,000 to the GEM (Al-Monitor, via AFP, June 12, 2025). Its headline pieces now are the Tanis gold, the Narmer Palette and the tomb goods of Yuya and Thuya.

Where the Crowds Went: Daily Visitors, Tahrir vs the GEM Daily visitors as a range. Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square before the GEM opened: 7,000 to 8,000 a day. The same museum in 2026: 1,000 to 2,000 a day, both per Al-Monitor, August 22, 2026. Grand Egyptian Museum in its first week of public opening, November 2025: about 19,000 a day, with 17,000 on November 9, per the Egypt State Information Service, November 10, 2025. 0 5,000 10,000 15,000 20,000 Tahrir, before the GEM opened 7,000 to 8,000 Tahrir, 2026 1,000 to 2,000 GEM, first week November 2025 17,000 to 19,000 Sources: Al-Monitor, Aug 22, 2026 (Tahrir); Egypt State Information Service, Nov 10, 2025 (GEM)
Tahrir lost most of its crowd when Tut left. That’s bad news for the museum and good news for you.

The case for Tahrir now is the empty rooms. It’s a better visit than it was, because the crowd has gone. Daily visitors fell from 7,000 to 8,000 before the GEM opened to between 1,000 and 2,000 in 2026 (Al-Monitor, August 22, 2026). The Tanis gold room, once a queue, is now somewhere you can stand and look.

The old building is cluttered in a way the GEM never is, and that’s part of its appeal. An EU-funded makeover that closed in February 2023 gave five of its galleries new displays and labels (EU Delegation to Egypt, February 20, 2023). With the crowds gone, you can stand close to Psusennes I’s silver coffin without anyone pushing past.

What’s next for it? The museum turns 125 in November 2027. Its director plans new lighting, climate control, digital ticketing and apps, and evening opening is under discussion but not yet in place (Al-Monitor, August 22, 2026). It has sat on UNESCO’s World Heritage Tentative List since 2021 (Egyptian Streets, April 9, 2021).

For now, it opens at 9am with last entry at 4pm (egymonuments.com, checked September 27, 2026). Give it two to three hours. Sadat metro station is under Tahrir Square, which makes it the easiest of the three to reach. It belongs in a downtown or east-bank day, and my Cairo guide explains how Cairo’s two sides fit together.

Which Cairo Museum Should You Visit, and in What Order?

Pick by how many museum visits your Cairo days can hold. With one, go to the GEM. With two, add NMEC. With three, add Tahrir on its own half day. The GEM costs 1,500 EGP against 550 for each of the others, but it’s also the only place with all of Tutankhamun.

Which Cairo Museums? A Decision Rule Decision chart. Start: how many museums fit your Cairo days? One: the GEM, for Tutankhamun, the Ramesses II colossus and the Khufu boat, 4 to 5 hours. Two: the GEM plus NMEC, Tutankhamun then the royal mummies, a full day or two half days. Three: all three, with Tahrir on its own half day for the Tanis gold and the Narmer Palette. Swap rule: if the Tanis gold or Old Kingdom statues are the draw, swap NMEC for Tahrir. Tahrir and NMEC are about 8 kilometres apart, the easiest pair to combine. The author’s rule, September 2026. How many museums fit your Cairo days? One Two Three The GEM Tut, the colossus and the Khufu boat 4 to 5 hours GEM + NMEC Tut, then the royal mummies A full day or two halves All three Tahrir on its own half day Tanis gold, Narmer Here for the Tanis gold or Old Kingdom statues? Swap NMEC for Tahrir. Tahrir and NMEC are about 8 km apart, the easiest pair to combine. The author’s decision rule, September 2026
Start from the GEM and add. The only reason to break the order is a particular love of Tanis or the Old Kingdom.

Here’s how that plays out for the most common trip types:

  • First trip, two or three Cairo days: the GEM with Giza, then NMEC on the east-bank day with Coptic Cairo.
  • History enthusiast, four or more days: all three. Do Tahrir after the GEM, so you see what the GEM doesn’t have.
  • Family with young kids: the GEM only. NMEC’s mummies hall is dim and quiet, which some children find unsettling.
  • Stopover of a day or less: the GEM, and nothing else.

Why NMEC before Tahrir? Because the mummies are a single, unrepeatable room, and NMEC takes less time. Tahrir rewards slow looking, and short trips don’t allow it. For the dynasties behind these collections, start with my ancient Egypt primer.

Can You Visit Two Cairo Museums in One Day?

Yes, but the pairing matters more than the plan. By road, the GEM is about 19 km from Tahrir and 18 km from NMEC, while Tahrir and NMEC are only about 8 km apart (OpenStreetMap routing, checked September 27, 2026). The drive times below are my estimates, in line with my Cairo guide’s traffic figures: 35 minutes at best on the GEM legs, and over an hour from about 3pm to 7pm.

PairRoad distanceRealistic driveWorks in a day?
GEM + NMECabout 18 km35 to 70 minYes, with the right order
GEM + Tahrirabout 19 km35 to 70 minOnly if you rush Tahrir
Tahrir + NMECabout 8 km15 to 30 minYes, easily

Plan on the longer time for any drive after lunch.

The two-museum day I’d plan runs backwards from what most people try. On a Wednesday or Saturday, start at NMEC when it opens at 9am, leave by 11, and drive to the GEM. You’ll have from about noon until the galleries close at 9pm, and you’ll dodge the afternoon traffic by staying put.

On a Friday, flip it. Spend the day at the GEM and Giza, then drive to NMEC for its 6pm to 9pm evening session, with last tickets at 8pm. On any other day, GEM in the morning and NMEC by 3pm works, but only just, since NMEC’s last ticket is at 4pm.

There’s no metro to the GEM yet. The first phase of Metro Line 4, with stations at the GEM and in Fustat, is due in the first half of 2028 (Daily News Egypt, April 28, 2026). Until then, use a ride-hailing app.

Egyptian Museum vs GEM FAQs

Is the Egyptian Museum the same as the Grand Egyptian Museum?

No. The Egyptian Museum is the old museum on Tahrir Square in downtown Cairo, open since 1902. The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) is the new one beside the Giza pyramids, about 19 km away, which opened to the public on November 4, 2025. They sell tickets on different websites, and the GEM costs 1,500 EGP against Tahrir’s 550.

Where is Tutankhamun’s gold mask now?

At the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza, alongside more than 5,000 other Tutankhamun objects. Tahrir’s Tutankhamun gallery closed on October 20, 2025, when the last pieces moved to Giza, so there’s no Tut gallery at the old museum any more.

Are the royal mummies at the Grand Egyptian Museum?

No. The royal mummies are at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) in Fustat. Twenty-two of them moved there from Tahrir on April 3, 2021. The Royal Mummies Hall is included in NMEC’s 550 EGP foreign adult ticket, with no separate mummies ticket on the official checkout in September 2026.

Is the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir still worth visiting?

On a longer trip, yes. The Tanis gold, the Narmer Palette and Yuya and Thuya’s tomb goods stayed, and daily visitors fell from 7,000 to 8,000 to between 1,000 and 2,000 in 2026, so the rooms are quiet. On a first trip of three days or less, I’d cut it.

Can you see the GEM and NMEC on the same day?

Yes, if you get the order right. On a Wednesday or Saturday, do NMEC at 9am and then the GEM until 9pm. On a Friday, reverse it and catch NMEC’s 6pm to 9pm session. The two are about 18 km apart by road.

Can you buy tickets at the door?

Not at the GEM, which has sold online only, at tickets.gem.eg, since December 1, 2025. The Tahrir museum and NMEC still sell at the gate, by card only, or online through the ministry’s egymonuments.com checkout, where they share a cart with Giza and most other ministry sites.

The Bottom Line

The Egyptian Museum vs GEM debate has a simple answer: they’re not rivals any more, because they hold different things. In short:

  • One museum: the GEM, 1,500 EGP, booked online before you fly.
  • Two: add NMEC for the royal mummies, 550 EGP.
  • Three: give Tahrir its own quiet half day, 550 EGP.
  • Same day: GEM and NMEC work in the right order; GEM and Tahrir rarely do.

Start with the Giza side: plan your pyramids morning first, then book your GEM slot.

It does carry advertising and partnerships, and anything commercial is disclosed on the page it appears on; it doesn’t buy a verdict or change the order of a recommendation. That’s why this page tells you to skip Tahrir on a short trip and still pick the priciest museum first. Where the sources disagreed, as on the mummy count and NMEC’s photo rule, I’ve shown both.
